—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, January 20,1979
By JOAN LIESAU
MILLERSVILLE - Two 16
year old youths from the
Penn Manor High School
have earned distinguished
awards from their Lancaster
County Red Rose FFA
chapter. Tim E. Kreider has
been honored as the Lan
ra«stpr Cnuntv Red Rose Star
Agri-businessman, and
Gordon Long has been
selected as Lancaster
County Red Rose Star
Farmer.
Tim is the son of Wilmer
and Joanne Kreider,
Washington Boro Rl. He has
worked for his father’s
business, W.E. Kreider
Quality Meats, Inc. for many
years. Tim felt he won the
award for the records he
kept on the hours he worked
and the “jobs Fve done”.
Tim’s main responsibility
were to sell products in
cluding 1 unchin eats, salads
and cheeses, and cleaning up
equipment. The
agri-businessman works
Friday and Saturday nights,
and throughout the Summer.
Tim has served as
assistant sentinal and
County delegate. He has par
ticipated in his chapter’s pin
orders, hunting chart, and
citrus fruit committees.
Tim’s FFA projects include
hog fattening, steers, and
two acres of com. He has
raised 67 cross bred bogs in
his FFA career along with
six steers. Urn has sold all
his steers to his father’s
meat business.
If Tim bad to explain
farming to a non-farmer, he
said he would tell them that
“it’s a lot of hard work and
there is a problem getting
starting in fanning because
you have to buy equipment
and land which is ex
pensive.”
Tim said his goals are “to
work in agri-business and
make enough money to set
up a partnership with my
father on the farm.” And
that he would “continue with
an agribusiness career in the
meat area,” until that tune.
Gordon Long, the son of
Howard and Betty Long,
Columbia R 3, said that he
had to keep records on his
projects and be very active
on chapter committees to
compete for the Red Rose
Star Farmer award.
Coming from a 93 acre
farm, Gordon has served as
the junior ag treasurer,
assistant reporter and he is
presently serving as the
Manor FFA Chapter vice
president. Gordon has been
chairman of the Lancaster
hog show, Farm City Week,
and Starbicide committees.
He has won the chain gilt and
cham market hogs.
Gordon has many
FFA projects. Raising
tobacco because “it’s a good
cash crop” Gordon plants
four acres. He raises two
acres of com which goes into
feed for his livestock
projects. He has raised six
steers in his FFA career. He
explained they were mostly
cross breds. At shows,
Gordon said he placed about
the middle of his class and on
up.
Swine is Gordon’s mam
livestock interest. He has
raised 60 market hogs
altogether in FFA. He uses
Duroc-Yorkshire cross breds
because they are “good for
showing, good for growing.”
He also has a swine breeding

and litter in the FFA contest.
Gordon says he has made
money on his projects
through “prize money at
shows, good management,
and the right kind of stock.”
Gordon stressed record
keeping, if he were to give
advice to someone starting
out in the fanning business.
“Keep them up to date and
never fall behind in them”
he said. “Make sure they’re
