Congressman Robert
Walker, representing
Lancaster County and
portions of Lebanon and
Chester Counties, recently
released some of his
predictions for 1979, based
on information and news
reports that have come
across his desk. “My
predictions should not be
evaluated on how good a
prognosticator I turn out to
be; rather, they are intended
to give you an idea of what
the upcoming year may hold
in terms of national
policymaking," the
legislator explained. His
predictions follow.
Prediction #l. Congress
will be heavily concerned
with economic matters. In

economic downturn is likely
to get increased attention.
Prediction #2. Despite
assurances that he wants to
stop the movement toward
bigger and bigger govern
ment, President Carter will
propose policies aimed at
expanding the federal
bureaucracy. For example,
we can look for him to
propose and push the
creation of a Department of
-Education. -

Prediction #3. National
health insurance bills will
receive considerable at
tention on Capitol Hill but
proposals for a com
prehensive program will be
put aside chiefly because of
the additional expense to
taxpayers.
Prediction #4. We will
discover that the crisis in
Iran is largely due to Soviet
backed agitators seeking to
end American influence in
that country.
Prediction #5. Any SALT
(Strategic Arms Limitation
Treaty) agreement will be
the subject of a great
national debate not unlike
that which surrounded the
Panama Canal Treaty and
that debate will result in a
great deal of Congressional
controversy.
Prediction #6. Egypt and
Israel will come to a treaty
arrangement between
themselves but it will be
limited to assuring peace.
Those two nations will leave

of the year, there will be at
least six and perhaps as
many as a dozen announced
presidential contenders for
1980.
