Shelhamer advises producers HARRISBURG - State Agriculture Secretary Kent Shelhamer has advised Pennsylvania livestock producers that Food Fair, Inc. has been ordered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to stop violating the payment requirements of the Packers and Stockyards (P & S) Act. Shelhamer said that the corporation, charged m October with failing to pay for more than $2.6 million worth of livestock bought from at least 42 livestock firms, has filed a Chapter XI petition under the Federal Bankruptcy Act. According to the Agriculture Secretary, Food Fair owns and operates Midtown Veal and Mutton of Food Fair violations Company of Newark, N.J., and Allen Packing Company of Elizabeth, N.J., which have purchased a significant volume of Pennsylvania beef and pork. Shelhamer said that Pennsylvania livestock producers should be aware of the situation with Food Fair, to avoid any serious losses due to failure on the part of the company to pay. Neither firm is currently buying livestock for slaughter. The Agricultural Marketing Service of the USDA reports that all cash sellers to the firm have now been paid, as required by.the 1976 trust provisions amendments to the P & S Act.
