—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, December 23,1978 20 Juniata Co, DHL4. names top producers MIFFLINTOWN - The Juniata County Dairy Herd Improvement Association finished it’s 55th year with 66 whole-year and 10 owner- sampler herds. An average of 3179 cows were on test. The average production per cow was 15,007 pounds of milk containing 570 pounds of butterfat. The Pennsylvania Dairyman’s Association awarded purple rosette ribbons to the two top herds in the county. The C. Roy Henry Holstein Herd, Port Royal, was high m butterfat. The 49 cow herd averaged 18,650 pounds milk and 737 pounds butterfat The Kenneth Deamer Holstein Hero, Thomp sontown, was high in milk. The 51 cow herd averaged 19,156 pounds milk and 719 pounds butterfat. The Dairyman’s Association also awarded gold rosette ribbons for average production per cow of over 600 pounds of but terfat to the following herd owners. Mark L. Port Royal; and James & Trudy Wagner & Son. Miffhntown. Over the past year, Juniata County has in creased their average number of cows by 77 to a total of 3179. Those cows are producing 147 more pounds of milk then last years 14,860 pound average. Even though the pounds of milk increased, the pounds of butterfat produced was two pounds less than last years 572 pound average. In comparison with the State, Juniata County had Eleven of the nineteen Juniata County DHIA owners of herds averaging 600-700 pounds of butterfat received gold rosettes in person at the DHIA Annual Meeting. For per cow averages: Juniata came out way ahead of the State with a 15007 pounds of milk average, 532 pounds more than the State’s 14475 average. The County also showed a 22 pound gam on the State’s 548 pounds of butterfat average per cow, with the per cent fat being the same. The County’s value of milk was higher at 1529 compared to the State’s 1498. The value plus/minus feed cost was 857 for the State and eight less, or, 845 for the County. The County fed 585 more pounds of gram compared to the State’s 5882 pounds fed. Hay, silage and other forages were less though. Hay fed, according to State averages, was 3967 pounds, while the County fed 3849 pounds. Silage and other forages fed by the State totaled 15,127 while the County fed substantially less at 13,674 pounds. The County averaged 13 more days on pasture (85 days) compared to the State’s 72 days. Gram costs were $lO more for the County while the'State paid $343. Hay prices were $43 more for the County, and the state was paying $lOl, compared to Juniata’s $144. The County paid out $2O less for other feed costs ($155) and the State paid $175. Pasture cost the County $3l while the State averaged $22. Totaling the feed cost figures, the County paid $43 dollars more for feed per cow then the State averaged. Said another way, the County’s feed cost per hundred weight of milk was $.13 higher at $4.56 com pared to the State average of $4.43 per hundred weight of milk produced.
