Omaha Cattle December 21,1978 Cattle - compared with previous week’s close - slaughter steers closed firm to 50 cents higher and heifers 50-75 cents higher cows 50 cents higher, instances 1.00 higher and bulls were firm. Four day receipts this week 15,500, last week 17,800, year ago 15,100. Fed cattle prices advance sharply on the week’s opening session, but a part of the upturn was eroded in midweek trading even on small supplies. There was an aggressive early demand, but most interests were number-counscious on the late rounds, looking toward the approaching long non- slaughter weekend. The overall finish of the steer and heifer supply was fairly attractive with a rather liberal percentage choice, but many consignments carried a substantial coating of mud; often mud and yield grade were primary price determining factors. Slaughter steers made up approximately 36 per cent and heifers 31 per cent. Cows comprised 12 per cent and feeders 8 per cent.
