Walker requests oil price inquiry
WASHINGTON, D.C. -
Congressman Bob Walker
(R-16-Pa.) has charged that
the holiday gasoline price
hike by the nation’s major oil
companies makes them
appear as the ‘‘Scrooge of
Christmas present.”
The charge came in a
letter to Energy Secretary
James Schlesmger in which
Walker requested that all
Department of Energy
(DOE) information
regarding the oil industry’s
price hike action be made
available to the public.
“I have made this request

gasoline consumer has the
opportunity to judge whether
or not this action by the oil
industry is fair,” Walker
said.
“The big oil companies
claim no shortage of crude
oil which makes their claim
of short supplies and the
need for price hikes highly
questionable,” he continued.
Walker noted that while
the big oil companies are
relying on an argument of
reduced refinery capacity,
that “flies m the face” of
recent demands by these
same companies that their
own retail gasoline dealers
mcrease sales volumes.

“I am left with the im

price increase in unneeded,
unconscionable and highly
inflationary.
“If that impression is
correct, the oil companies
would appear to be the
‘Scrooge of Christmas pr
sent,’ ” he continued.
Walker concluded by
saying he believed the only
way for that impression to be
verified or denied is for the
DOE to provide the
American people all the
facts with which to make
their own judgment.
