TOPEKA, Kans.-A lot of
politicians got the tax and
spending limitation message
in the November 7 election,
and now it is up to the
citizens to make sure they
don’t forget it, Richard W.
Owens said here this week.
Owens, chief ad
ministrator and secretary of
the American Farm Bureau
Federation, spoke at the
annual meeting of the
Kansas Farm Bureau.
“A wave of conservatism
is sweeping the country,”
Owens said, pointing out that
voters in 14 states con
sidered some type of tax and
spending limitation similar
to California’s Proposition 13
in the recent general elec
tion. In ten of those states,
voters approved those
measures by healthy
margins, he added.
Despite the trend toward
conservatism, Owens
warned that politicians
continue to advance in
compatible political
solutions for economic
problems.
Owens cited the recently
passed federal income tax
cut which will be wiped out
by the previously hiked
social security tax as an
example of a political
solution to an economic
problem.
“Another example,” he
added, “is the Humphrey-
Hawkins ‘full employment’
bill which could become
dangerously inflationary.”
Owens also warned that
