He plans a career as a mechanic, possibly in auto racing. The Allegheny County youth purchased the 1965 auto for $l,OOO in the fall of 1977. The vehicle had a special racing engine and drive train already in it, but the car has been severely abused, he said. “As I worked on it, I made special modifications so I could re-do it for street use at the end of the racing season,” he said. The 4-H’er worked throughout last Winter to take the car apart. He sanded all the parts, cleaned them up, repainted each' part using rustproof paint on body parts, and put it all back together again. He then installed roll bars inside the shell and re-installed the seats and mechanical systems. “This was a tremendous challenge for me and when the motor turned over, the feeling of excitement seemed to be impossible.” The youth learned how to properly prime and paint the body. He has raced the car a few times and said he plans to put in a different engine and sell his racing engine. The nine-year 4-H’er earlier had made a go-cart, using a motorcycle engine.
