FLEM3NGTON, N.J. - “Why did my chrysanthemums
bloom so late?” ask many home gardeners, and the best
answer is that they are the wrong varieties, according to
experts.
Some excellent types that are grown as potted plants
and cut flowers in greenhouses just aren’t satisfactory for
outdoor planting.
Many take as long as 12 weeks from bud to bloom. These
plants normally flower the first week in December, which
is just right in the greenhouse but entirely too late for
garden plants.
The beautiful Princess Ann varieties, for, example, are
sold as potted plants and require 10 weeks from the time
buds form until bloom. They do not flower until the second
week in November and are not satisfactory as garden
chrysanthemums.
Plants that need only six to eight weeks from the tune
buds form to flowering make the best garden varieties.
These plants come into bloom between mid-September
and mid-October.
Varieties can be selected from catalogs that list the
blooming dates. Most catalogs listing home garden
varieties do not include those greenhouse types which are
not suitableiorthe homegarden.
In the Spring, many florists use lighting to bring garden
chrysanthemums into flower as potted plants. These can
be planted in a garden and will flower a second time in the
Fall.
