Members of Maryland's 4-H livestock judging team are home again after
having competed in several regional and national contests. Among the com
petitors is H. Mitchell Day, 17, of Marriottsville, third from right, who
represented his state this week as 4-H agricultural program winner at the 57th
annual National 4-H Congress in Chicago. Mitchell was also honored recently by
the Pennsylvania Co-op Swine Producers Association for being high individual in
junior swine judging during the Keystone International Livestock Exposition.
Other honors for the team include a fourth place over-all at the Keystone in
ternational and a 10th place in a 34-state field‘at the North American Livestock
Exposition. Team members are, left to right: L. Martin Hamilton of Cooksville,
assistant coach; Lynne Janney, 16, of Bloom; Ned Sayre, 17, of Churchville;
H.M. (“Mickey") Day; Gary Ruby, 16, of Hampstead; bnd William A. Curry of.
Beltsville, coach. Curry is an Extension livestock specialist at the University of
Maryland in College Park, and Hamilton is a 4-H and youth agent in Howard
County.
Fisher appointed to Agronomy post

of Gery J. Fisher to the
position of Agronomy
Department Manager. He
will be in charge of pur
chasing field seeds,
agricultural chemicals and
all fertilizer ingredients. He
will be responsible for the
overall operation of the
liquid and dry fertilizer
facilities.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - In
the fiscal year of 1978,
(October 1977 to September
1978) U.S. agricultural ex
ports now appear likely to
total around *20.6 billion, a
tenth above the record value
of the year 1977. The export
tonnage of major bulk
commodities will be up
about 15 per cent, according
to a report release by the
USDA.
Although prices for many
commodities have
strengthened during the
year, the export price index
for fiscal year 1978 is
estimated to be six per cent
below 1977.
Last year, U.S.
agricultural exports
required the output of 107
million acres, up five million
from 1976 and equivalent to
31 per cent of total U.S.
harvested acreage. Food
grains, chiefly wheat, ac
counted for 37 per cent of the
export acres; oil crops ac
