—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, November 18,1978 32 LIFE on the farm By Dieter Krieg, Editor With Thanksgiving approaching, I take inventory of what I hold dear. I count my blessings, of which there are many. The children and my wife, Lisa, come to mind first. They’re really special to come home to. Heidi, for example, never fails to greet me with an enthusiastic and loud "Hi Da 1 ” as soon as she hears me coming Then all 20 pounds of her, complete with sparkling eyes and a great big smile, come sailing towards me and into my arms to be picked up and hugged. I'm always happy to oblige. So much in fact, that everybody accuses me of having the little girl spoiled Paul and Karl are a source of joy too. Each day they have something to show me and I must marvel at their fine development. Both boys are usually eager helpers One is an artist, the other a builder Paul can run like a marathon champion when he wants to but can’t walk across the room if he's busy drawing pictures. Karl can be content building air planes, houses, and barns, and yet still have time to find Daddy’s shoes They’re both delightful And Mommy, she's very special too. She takes care of three small children and a husband who’s a boy at heart. She provides us all with love, comfort, warmth, and of course good eating. She is understanding, patient, loving, lovable. For her, I’m grateful. Before Ifou Start Riding High on the Hog... ITJT HERSHEY EQUIPMENT 0 INC. Designers of Qualify Systems for Poultry, Swine and Grain Handling . I’m also thankful for my parents, my upbringing, my heritage, my friends, and this beautiful world we live in. I’m thankful for Autumn, Winter, Spring and Summer I’m glad for trees, grass, animals', fields, breezes, sunshine, ram, and soil I’m thankful for my job and the satisfactions I’ve been able to derive from it 1 love the outdoors and agriculture I’m grateful to be a part of it. Included too in my inventory of cherished belongings and ex periences are the memories I hold of having once lived on a farm where horses pulled wagons fitted with wooden, iron-rimmed v/heels 1 remember the scent of leather harnesses and hay, and the unique smell of the dirt floo: in the toolshed. And who can forget the warmth and scent of a dairy barn, where the aromas of silage, hay, straw, and the cows themselves blend in for pure satisfaction A oouple years of life in a refugee camp also had their value an experience I wouldn’t trade away fo r anything Countless good memories of years gone by and a happy feeling for what I have today, make my inventory of what I hold dear endless I thank God for being so generous Have a happy Thanksgiving, everyone!
