The Farm Credit System
has gone through 60 years of
changes, said Shiflet. The
bonds issued by the FCS
command respect among
buyers, including foreign
governments, insurance
companies, and cor
porations. FCS bonds are
considered to be a safe in
vestment by buyers, which is
a reflection of the farmer’s
credibility and productivity,
Shiflet explained.

There were 980,326,080
bushels of feed gram and
wheat in the grain reserve as
of Oct. 27, according to Ray
Fitzgerald, administrator of
the Agricultural
Stabilization and Con
servation Service (ASCS).
As of that date, the reserve
held 34,435,332 bushels of
barley, 438,500,000 bushels of
com, 38,403,475 bushels of
oats, 65,559,729 bushels of
sorghum and 403,427,544
bushels of wheat.
The figures cited by ad
ministrator Fitzgerald were
based on a telephone survey
byASCS.
The gram reserve takes
grains off the market for a
period of up to three years,
or until market prices reach
stated levels.
