The last roses
(Continued from Page 50)
The mulch holds the moisture and deters the weeds
through the growing season. Krantz never allows the
bushes to bloom then form seed heads. He removes the old
blooms all Summer long. It is not unusual for him to have
bushels and bushels of spent blooms even though ones he
gives away many roses to the sick, the churches and
visiting friends, neighbors and relatives.
In addition to trimming, mulching, feeding and clearing
the bushes of spent flowers, Krantz explained that a
constant spraying schedule is necessary to induce good
blooms and healthy plants. To ward off black spot and

mildew, Krantz uses an oval spoonful of Phaltane to a
gallon of water. To deter insects, he adds a tablespoon of
Isotox to a gallon of water. He advises spraying early in
the morning when the dew is over and before the air
temperature is over 80 degrees. If it is too warm early in
the morning, one may spray after four p.m. or so that the
spray will be dry before the evening dew appears.
Spraying at eight to 10 day intervals, depending on
humidity and rain, should be sufficient. In July and
August, the worst enemy of roses appears - the Japanese
beetle. To combat destruction of the leaves and new
rosebuds, Krantz sprays with Sevm as often as every
other day.
After blooming is over and Winter approaches, Krantz
cuts the tops of the bushes down to a height of three and
one half to four feet. Topping the bushes in mid-November
before Winter sets m stops the wind from whipping the
stalks back and forth causing a hole to form around the
plant at the ground level. Water could dram into the hole
and soak down around the roots and eventually freeze and
split the root.
If the home gardener has only a few roses, he should try
to bank the stalks for Winter with a layer of soil eight to
ten inches deep. “It would be almost impossible to bank
all these with soil,” Krantz admitted.
He tries to protect his bushes the best he can by using
practically anything he can find. Grass clippings,
shrubbery trimmings, frozen mangolds and leaves help
form a protective covering. Using a mulch of all leaves
encourages mice, Krantz warned. In spots where the wind
might blow away the mulch, he anchors the leaves down
with pine needles and rosebush trimmings or some other
heavier material.

BV,
For more than sixty years Ivan Krantz has been tending
his roses from early April through late November. In
cluding that hobby into a full life as a farmer, father, and
Sunday School teacher and superintendent for sixty-two
years has kept him very busy. This eighty-two old great
grand father is as enthusiastic as ever about his roses and
he can rightfully tell anyone that caring for roses is a lot
more work than the phrase “living in a bed of roses” is
understood to mean. It is no idle hobby, but is one which
has given Krantz six decades of enjoyment.
