—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, November 11,1978 40 Ronald Juftes named finalist in FFA contest KENNETT SQUARE - Ronald Juftes, a 20 year old from Kennett Square, has been named the Eastern Regional winner of the FFA Nursery Operations Proficiency Award. He is one of the four members in the nation to receive this title. One of these four will be named the national winner in Nursery Operations at the Thursday morning session, November 9, of the FFA’s Golden Anniversary Celebration at the 1978 National Convention in Kansas City, Mo. Ronald has set his goal to become a commercial greenhouse businessman. Ron’s achievements in nursery operations began with his Vo-Tech school training where he learned the different aspects of the greenhouse and nursery operations. Ron feels his greatest achievement was “being chosen as one of seven students to attend the Professional Gardener Training Program at Longwood Gardens.” This is a two-year program that involves an indepth study in numerous courses relating to nursery operations, with on-the-job training in the Longwood Gardens’ facilities. Ronald served as the Aston Vo-Tech High_School Green Thumb FFA Chapter sentinel, reporter, and president. He has been on the banquet committee, and earned Star Greenhand, Chapter Fanner and State Fanner Degree. His other activities mclude Who’s Who,: Pennsylvania Horticulture Society, YMCA, and a recycling club. To participate FFA members submit an application on which they record their training and experience in nursery operations. Requirements on the application mclude an annual breakdown of ex penses and income involved with the applicant’s nursery operation experience, a complete inventory of equipment owned fully or in partnership by the ap plicant, a listing of skills and competencies developed, and a list of improved practices in nursery operations. In addition, applicants must show their involvement in FFA and other leadership develop ment activities.
