Carpenters sweep
Southdown show
HARRISBURG - Penn
sylvania sheep breeders
faced stiff competition in the
Southdown breeding sheep
classes, with Maryland and
Ohio breeders dominating
most of the classes at the
Keystone International
Livestock Exposition,
November 6.
The champion Southdown
ram was a spring lamb
exhibited by Lori Taylor,
Quaker City, Ohio. W.G.
Carpenter & Son of Jef
ferson, Md., took all other
honors in the Southdown
judging, including the
reserve champion ram, a
yearling. The Carpenters
were named the premier
breeder and exhibited the
champion and reserve
champion ewe.

Butz to speak at
com conference
OCEAN CITY, Md. - Dr.
Earl Butz, dean emeritus of
agriculture, Purdue Univer
sity, and former secretary of
agriculture, will be the
featured speaker at the fifth
Annual Delmarva Corn
Technology Conference. His
topic will be “Food - Foun
dation for Peace”.
The Conference is schedul
ed for Tuesday, December
12, at the Ocean City Conven
tion Hall, Ocean City, Md.
The event is sponsored by
the Maryland and Delaware
Cooperative Extension Ser
vices and the various
Delmarva soybean in
dustries.
Besides Dr. Butz, the pro
gram will feature farmers
and specialists
knowledgeable in corn pro
duction and marketing.
The morning session will
begin at 8:30 a.m., with ex
hibits, coffee and donuts.
The program will get under
way at 9:30a.m.
A broad area of topics will
be covered ranging from
farm safety to the workings
of the commodity market.
Dr. Bill Mitchell,
agronomy, and Thomas
Williams, agricultural
engineering, both University
of Delaware Extension
specialists, will discuss
results of the first State Com
Irrigation Program and
their goal of 200 bushels per
acre.
No-till com fetilization and
herbicide application will be
the topic covered by Dr.
Allen Bandel, Extension
specialist, soils. University
of Maryland, and Frank
Webb, Extension specialist,
agronomy. University of
Delaware

tion. Mark Powers, ex
ecutive vice-president of
commodites, Thomson-
McKinnon Securities, Inc.,
New York, N.Y. will explain
the workings of the com
modity market and possibly
encourage some farmers to
consider this avenue of
marketing.
Ronald Wade, Extension
Agent, agricultural science,
Dorchester County, will
moderate a panel discussing
tillage techniques and their
effects on crop production.
Safety is another topic that
will be stressed at the
meeting. Ordie Hogsett, Ex
tension specialist, farm safe
ty, University of Illinois, will
speak on safety in com pro
duction.
Anyone interested in atten
ding the meeting may pick
up tickets at local
agribusinesses. There is no
charge. Tickets will also be
available at the door.
