A York County youth, Steven Wilson of New Freedom, was awarded the American Farmer Degree on Thursday during ceremomes at the National FFA Convention. He was one of 807 FFA’ers from across the United States who rceived the prestigious honor. Nominated for the degree ny the Pennsylvania FFA Four rabid bats reported HARRISBURG - Two of four positively diagnosed rabies cases m October in volved human exposure, while a third case involved a dog, according to State Agriculture Secretary Kent Shelhamer Shelhamer said that all four cases involved bats and were diagnosed positive by the Agriculture Depart ment’s Bureau of Animal In dustry Laboratories. One case each was reported in York, Warren, Bucks and Bedford County. In Warren County a two year-old girl from Sheffield was bitten while m her bedroom. A Dilisburg, York County man was also bitten by a rabid bat during the month. Both persons are receiving treatment at the present. Wilson, the son of Mr. and Mrs. C Earle Wilson, New Freedom, is currently in volved in crop farming and a swine farrowing operation He is a graduate of Kennard- Dale High School, Fawn Grove, and has Ralph Travis In Everett, Bedford Coun ty, a dog previously vac cinated against rabies, was bitten. The dog received a booster shot and has been confmed and undergoing a ten-day observation period by a veterinarian. Shelhamer said that the Bedford County case em phasized his advice that pet owners have their dogs and cats vaccinated to prevent the loss of these pers through contact with rabid animals “In the Bedford County in cident, the dog will probably survive, largely due to its owner’s foresight in having the pet mnoculated against rabies and quick thinking in contacting a veterinarian after the exposure.” Bats have accounted for all 20 rabies cases diagnosed in the commonwealth in 1978. and Charles Wright as his FFA advisors. Wilson earned the American Farmer Degree - the highest award attainable from the FFA Association, on the basis of his work on a large York County crops farm. He has had a variety of responsibilities and ex periences working with several crops from planting, through spraying, har vesting, and drying. In addition, he has been in volved with repairs and overhauling of equipment during Winter months. While in high school, Wilson was active in the FFA, concentrating primarily on livestock ac tivities and shows.
