Pa. 4-H horse judging team first in nation
CARLISLE - Months of
training and competition
paid off for the Cumberland
County 4-H horse judging
team members as they
captured first place in the
national 4-H horse judging
contest held in Harrisburg,
November 4 as part of the
Keystone International
Livestock Exposition.
The contest attracted 4rH
Judging teams from 26
states. The team from North
Carolina placed second;
Virginia judges were third;
the entry from New Jersey
placed fourth and the fifth
spot was won by the team
from Indiana.
The Cumberland County 4-
H team representing Penn
sylvania which compiled
1729 points out of a possible
1950 consisted of Judy Long,
Carlisle; Deb King,
Mechanicsburg R 2; Betty
Nichols, Mechanicsburg;
and Cindy Otto, Carlisle RB.
Miss Barbara Rebert,
Carlisle Rfi, was coach for
the winning team and
received the coach’s trophy
presented by The In
ternational Arabian Horse
Association. The Penn
sylvania Equine Council
presented a Revere bowl to
the team with replica’s for
each team member. The
team also received the
National Horse and Pony
Youth Activities, Council
Challenge rotating trophy.
Judy Long placed fourth
high individual in the contest
with 588 points, eight points
out of first place. She also
placed second high in
dividual in the placing of
conformation classes. Judy
earned 411 points, one point
behind a Minnesota 4-H’er
who places first. Deb King
placed sixth high individual
in the placmg of con
formation classes with a
score of 401.
The Pennsylvania team
placed first in placing the
conformation classes and
received ribbons and silver
trophy trays for each team
member from the Penn
sylvania National Horse
Show.
Betsy Nichols placed ninth
high individual in the placing
of performance classes.
The event, for 10 years a
regional contest was

designated the National 4-H
Horse Judging Contest this
year.
Judging included six
halter classes of four horses
each and three performance
classes. Members were
required to give oral reasons
on three halter classes and
one performance class.
Pennsylvania didn’t do
quite as well in the 4-H Horse
Bowl contest, coming in fifth
place. New York took first
honors in the Horse Bowl,
followed by Massachusetts,
New Hampshire and Ohio.
Individual high ranking
winners were Sarah Ham
mond of New Hampshire
with 33 points and Jennifer
Scott of Massachusetts with
30 points. Jennifer Weber of
Pennsylvania came in fifth
place in individual scores
with 21 points.
Connecticut was named
winner of the Intercollegiate
division, scoring a total of
2310 points. Penn State
ranked fifth in In
tercollegiate judging, with
2295 points, and Texas Tech
