Land application workshop set
CHAMBERSBURG --
“Land Application of
Wastewater and Sludge”
will be the subject of an all
day workshop offered to
minicipal officials and in
terested citizens in Franklin
County. The workshop is
scheduled for November 18,
9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Mont
Alto Campus of the Penn
State. Since many Franklin
County communities have a
problem of disposing of
sewage effluent and sludge,
this program has been
developed by Penn State to
help local officials deter
mine the most effective and
economical method of waste
water treatment.
According to County
Agent, William Reagan,
many municipalties are
faced with the prospect of
building new sewage
treatment plants or updating

ana treatment systems
Federal law now encourages
land disposal systems for
sewage wastes, so it is very
important that municipal
officials understand the
principles of disposing of
wastes on the land.
The LAWWS program to
be presented at Mont Alto
will cover 12 aspects of the
land disposal system, in
cluding waste water
treatment processes, site
selection and soil suitability,
heavy metals, health effects,
cost analysis, and impacts
on the community, says
Reagan. Materials available
in the LAWWS program
include 12 video cassettes,
10 to 15 minutes in length; a
course reference manual of
223 pages and a participant’s
handbook. These materials
will be available to those
attending the all-day
program.

the proposed increase is also
specifically inequitable to

“We urge further study of
the proposed increase to
determine if it is I°'
consistant with price

also whether the costs of
moving soybeans warrants
an increase.” Eastern,

of Agriculture studies have
shown that rail costs of
moving soybeans are
already more than met by
existing tariffs so that an
increase cannot be
justified,” he said.
