presented by Irving Witter.
Carol Balmer, Connie’s
sister, won the top project
honor last year.
Girls „ completely
dominated the project
awards this year. High
scores in other breeds in
cluded Karen Schmuck,
Peach Bottom R 2, Ayrshire;
Sandra Schmuck, Peach
Bottom R 2, Brown Swiss;
Joyce Stoltzfus, Gap Rl,
Holstein; and Gail
Bukowski, Mount Joy Rl,
Jersey. The awards in each
breed were sponsored by

were given by Robert
Gregory.
Karen Schmuck also
received recognition for
having Grand Champion
Ayrshire at the district 4-H
Show.
Gary Akers, 4-H leader,
presented trophies to
Lancaster County’s dairy
judging team which placed
first in slate competition at
4-H State Days. Members of
the team were Doug Her
shberger, Quarryville R 4;
John Frey, Willow Street;
Neal Crouse, Stevens Rl;
and Dennis Kulp, Manheim
R 4. Hershberger placed
second in the state contest
and Frey placed third. The
two top team members
traveled as part of a Penn
sylvania state team to the
national 4-H judging contest
at Madison, Wisconsin, and
helped bring the team to a
second place finish, the
highest any Pennsylvania
team has placed in recent
years. In the national contest
Frey placed seventh and
Hershberger placed 13th.
On behalf of the Offers
and with a special note of
appreciation from the dairy
judging team, John Frey and
Kevin Eshelman presented
former Extension County
Agent N. Alan Bair with a
watch. Akers said, “We will
miss him - he did a great
job.” Bair is now Director of
Member Services for
Atlantic Breeders
Cooperative.
