102 —lancaster Farming, Saturday, October 7,1978 Sue Detter York Co. youths take seven state 4-H UNIVERSITY PARK - Seven York County young adults, who have compiled outstanding records in 4-H work, were named state contest winners in the 1978 4- H National Awards Program. Named were Brooke Palmer, 16, Shrewsbury, state winner in food preservation; Tommy Welsh, 18, East Berlin Rl, winner in dairy; Susan Better, 16, Dover, winner in breads; and Christy Jo Waltersdorff, 19, York, state public speaking contest winner. Bonnie Wire, 17, Spring Grove R 4, photography contest winner; Timothy Beck, 17, Seven Valleys R 2, winner in beef; and Jonathan Myers, 16, Thomas ville Rl, state winner in citizenship. Brooke, Tommy, Susan, Christy, and Bonnie will receive expense-paid trips to National 4-H Congress in Chicago, November 26 to 30. Timothy and Jonathan will be eligible to attend the national conference. All will compete for awards at the national level. Support of the food preservation project is provided by the Kerr Glass Manufacturing Co.; dairy, the Insurance Company of North America; breads, Standard Brands In corporated; public speaking, the Union Oil Company of California; photography, Eastman Kodak Company; beef, the National 4-H Council; and citizenship, the Coca-Cola Company. Brooke Palmer, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Glenn E. Palmer, is a high school senior. She has been a 4-H member for eight years. A member of the Shrewsbury 4-H Community Club and York County 4-H Horticulture Club, she served as president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, news reporter, and historian. She also assisted with club activities and events as a teen leader. The state contest winner completed projects in food preservation, home en vironment, flowers, clothing, foods, citizenship, teen leadership, careers, photography, handyman, and bicycle. Locally, she took part in 4- H camp,-exchange program, demonstration days, dress revue, leader’s banquet, and Rural Life Sunday. Brooke also participated in the Regional 4-H Teen Leaders Retreat, Regional 4- H Dress Revue, Regional 4-H Demonstration Day, Penn sylvania 4-H Leadership Jonathon Myers Congress, State 4-H Achievement Days, State 4- H Capital Days, Farm Show, and National Junior Hor ticultural Association Convention. She was selected as York County’s 4-H Queen and won York County 4-H Out standing Girl and Leader ship Awards. She also was a Keystone 4-H Award winner in home environment, food preservation, recreation, and achievement. Commenting on the values of the educational youth program, Brooke said: “4-H has made me realize that not only am I a member of a group working for a common cause, but an individual with unique ideas.” The son of Mr. and Mrs. James E. Welsh, Jr., Tommy is a 1978 high school graduate employed as a farmer. He has been a 4-H member for seven years. A member of seven York County 4-H Clubs, he served as president, vice president, news reporter, treasurer, and game leader. He also served as a teen leader. The state dairy contest winner completed projects in dairy, electric, petroleum power, riflery, health, teen leadership, gardening, photography, pesticides, automotive, and careers. In York County, Tommy was active m the 4-H demonstration day, family fun night, achievement program, officers training, and leader’s banquet. He also took part in the Regional 4-H Teen Leaders Retreat, District and State 4- H Dairy Shows, Regional 4-H Demonstration Day, Penn sylvania 4-H Leadership Congress, Report to the State Team, and Royal Winter Agricultural Fair m Toronto, Canada. He was selected as York County’s Outstanding 4-H Boy and won 4-H Keystone Awards in dairy and achievement. “4-H has given me the opportunity to leam new skills and knowledge,” he says. Susan Detter is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lome Detter, and a junior at the Dover Area High School She has been a 4-H member for seven years. A member of five county 4- H Clubs, she served as news reporter, secretary, and teen leader. Susan completed projects in customize your diet, food science, ceramics, careers, gardening, canning, home improvement, photography, handyman, and pet care. Locally, she participated in county 4-H camp, ex- Tim Beck awards change trip, officers training, roundup, fair, and achievement program. Susan also took part in Pennsylvania 4-H Leader ship Congress, Farm Show, and Regional 4-H Teen Leaders Retreat. She won 4-H trophies for gardening and modern meals. “Through 4-H work, I have made extra money with my projects. It also nas helped me to make many friends,” Susan points out. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Russell E. Wire, Bonnie is a freshman at the York College of Pennsylvania, majoring in communication. She has been a 4-H member for eight years. A member of four county 4-H Clubs, she served as president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, news reporter, and game leader. She also served as a teen leader for photography and baking. She completed projects in several units of photography, automotive, sewing, breads, baking, horticulture, leathercraft, teen leadership, and health. In York County, Bonnie was active in the 4-H day camp, dress revue, demonstration day. Rural Life Sunday, roundup, and officers training. She also took part in the Regional 4-H Teen Leaders Retreat, Regional 4-H Demonstration Day, Penn sylvania 4-H Leadership Congress, State 4-H Achievement Days, Citizenship Short Course, and Eastern Regional U.S. Engineering Contest. She was state winner in the 1977 Autorama Contest and was selected as York County’s Outstanding 4-H Girl. “4-H has taught me leadership and respon sibility. It also has helped me in my career selection,” she points out. Timothy Beck is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Beck, Sr. He is a freshman at Penn State, majonng in animal science. He has been a 4-H member for 10 years. A member of three York County 4-H Clubs, he served as president, vice president, treasurer, news reporter, game leader, and teen leader. The state beef contest winner completed projects in baby beef, handyman, veterinary science, plant science, and meats. Locally, he participated in 4-H judging events, day camp, picmc, and exchange program. It also helped me in deciding what major to take in college,” he says. The son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul H. Myers, Jr., Jonathon is a junior at the Spring Grove High School. He has been a 4-H member for seven years. A member of four local 4-H Clubs, Jonathan served as president, secretary, news reporter, and treasurer. He also served as a teen leader. The state contest winner completed projects in health, dairy, gardening, capons, small engines, ceramics, leathercraft, archery, and bicycle. In York County, he was active in the 4-H roundup, day camp, county council, demonstration day, achievement day, and Rural Life Sunday. He also took part in the Regional 4-H Teen Leaders Retreat, District 4-H Camp, District 4-H Dairy Show, and Regional 4-H Demonstration Day. He won special 4-H honors in the county.
