Dueling on the log, David Miller, of Seven Valleys, seen on the right, defeated
all his opponents, to win the championship. Here he is seen jousting with Buck
Young, of Scranton.
The team of Gary Collins,
Milton Grove, and Paul
Cogar, Webster Springs,W.
Va., won the log rolling,
moving their lopsided log up
and down the bumpy path.
Their winning time was 47.37
seconds.
Paul Cogar was a member
of a winning team again,
when he and Kathy Parrel,
entered the Jack and Jill
cross cut contest, sawing
across a poplar log in 10.20
seconds.
But then came an event
not often seen in the Lan
caster Farming area. The
Pensylvania state cah
mpionship tobacco spitting
was at stake with local
competitors trying to beat
Bill Pahokm, Coudersport,
who was there to defend his
title.
Nine men entered the
contest, where they had to
stand a measured distance
from a hot pot bellied stove
and aim to hit it, so that the
jince would sizzle. Each
person was allowed thirty
seconds to make his try.
Jay Frey, Sr. Conestoga
R 2, won the event, tying
Pahokin’s record of 18 feet.
But to be the Pa. state
champion, he would have
had to beat that record, so
Pahokm is still the official
state champion, even though
he placed third in this
contest.
