It is a riot of colors at this time of year. It makes me sad to think of it all dying in a month or so. But as of now, the row of scarlet sage is the attention getter next to the brilliantly colored petunias. It’s dif ficult to realize how many shades of pink can be crowded into one small area. The dwarf mangolds that come m many hues or yellow, gold and red and are quite spectacular. The tall flowers like cosmos, cornflower, gaillardia and scabiosa have many blossoms but leave something to be desired as they fell over and had to be staked. The fact that our kittens loved to play around them did nothing for iheir appearance. One flower that shouldn’t be forgotten is the celosia or cockscomb with its nch crimson color. It is one of the many flowers and weeds that I dry for bouquets for winter use. One year we sold many of these plumes plus straw flowers to a local garden center As her flower garden covers a thirty by twenty foot space at the edge of my big vegetable garden, she York Fair (Continued from Page 55) Aged Cows 1. Dar-Dale had plenty of specimens to choose from when com peting at the 4-H Achievement Day in August. She was pleasantly sur prised to learn that her display of various flowers was chosen champion. A few years of practice in arranging an artistic exhibit does help. Some participants don’t realize that one doesn t achieve perfection over night, m fact sometimes one never achieves it You notice that I’m not talking about my flower garden which is the same size. It does have some beautiful snapdragons which I raised from seed and a few tube-roses fill the air with their sweet'fragrance. But, generally it lacks color and of course I’d like to blame this on the fact that it is located under a large pine tree and not on my inability to grow flowers. S Shenandoah AGRI EQUIPMENT, INC.
