Sudans linked to horse disease NORRISTOWN - Horses on sudan or sudan hybrid pastures during the Summer and early Fall may develop crystitis syndrome,” a disease of the urinary bladder. The causative substance of this disease syndrome is not known, but the symptoms are posterior in coor dination, urinary in continence, and abortion in some pregnanat mares. Also in mares, there is a loss of hair on the hind legs caused by the irritation of the urine. M horses and breeds are susceptible; however, this condition is more prevalent m mares, says Kadwill. Mares affected with cystitis syndrome commonly exhibit signs of heat; however, this is not true heat, but instead is the result of irritation of the uretha and vagina. Affected geldings exhibit the urinary drib- bling. Once urine dribbling is evident, the animals usually die There are several reports of this condition in P-A-G SEED horses of the southwest and the one constant factor in each case is the pasturing of sudan or sudan hybrid. Cured hays from these crops are also hazardous for horses. Warning statements on tags of sudan seed request that this not be used for horse pasture. More recently, reports suggest that sudan pasture may be the cause of fetal anklyosis as well as all or many of the symptoms listed above. ~ MANAGE to prevent XSrti /nv&cj ranch f 'j^ccsdenls 41
