—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, September 23,1978 32 Property tax defended at Grange meeting HARRISBURG - David Kirkpatrick, research analyst for Senator Patrick Stapleton of Indiana County, told the Pennsylvania State Grange’s Agricutural, Legislative, and Dairy Committees that the property tax is not as bad as it seems. Kirkpatrick addressed the Grange's committees at the Excellent Inn in Harrisburg last week. Urban birds like country setting UNIVERSITY PARK - Trees and shrubs are the best devices to attract birds into urban areas, studies at The Pennsylvania State University indicate. The findings also confirm what most bird watchers see, that feeders increase the number of birds around individual homes, especially in Winter. Wooded residential sites had a significantly higher number of species and in dividual birds than non wooded or field habitats. This was true in both Summer and Winter. Natural stands of trees and shrubs were most ef fective in increasing bird numbers and variety of species. However, planted trees and shrubs of significant size and number were acceptable. Bird feeders were the single most important factor in Winter to attract a variety of species. Even the Downy woodpecker, highly dependent on deciduous forests, was found at feeders in non-wooded residential sites. Bird populations were notably low in old fields during Winter - the habitat with the least trees or shrubs and no bird feeders. The study was financed by the Forest Service of the U.S. Department of NEW HOLLAND FARMERS FAIR OCTOBER 4-5- 6 - 7 Send this coupon for entry number to ENTRY CLERK 361 Valley View Drive New Holland.
