WASHINGTON, D.C. -
Speaking to the National

USDA Secretary Bob
Bergland said, “Because oil:

energy-intensive, energy
shortages for whatever
reason can cause severe
disruptions to the production
of food and fiber.” Under
existing laws, the food and
fiber system is not

for interstate natural gas to
“low priority” users.
Bergland went on to say that
agriculture was exempted
from these increases until
after 1985 because
agriculture and the food
system are considered high
priorities. The Act also
prohibits any curtailment of
natural gas tb agriculture
unless there are other
economically available
sources. Bergland stated
that he would certify the
essential agriculture uses of
natural gas in order to
maintain full food and fiber
production.
