EPHRATA - The
Ephrata Street Fair, Penn
sylvania’s largest of its kind,
launches its 60th year on
Tuesday, September 26th
and continues through
Saturday, September 30th.
The fair, inaugurated in 1919
as a homecoming for World
War I veterans, attracts
over 200,000 persons each
year.
The parade, highlighting
the five day affair, begins its
march through the streets of
Ephrata at seven o’clock on
Wednesday evening, Sep
tember 27th. (Rain Date -
September 28) Drawing over
65,000 viewers, the parade is
composed of talented high
school bands, a variety of
marching and special in
terest groups, a beautiful
array of floats and the lovely

Pageant contestants.
Warwick High School, 1978
Honor Band, will be last in
the line of march and at the
close of the parade will
present a concert in front of
the viewing stand on Lake
Street.
Visitors of all ages will
enjoy the various displays to
be found at specific locations
throughout the fair grounds.
Housing the baked, canned,
dried goods, jellies, flowers
and crafts will be the
basement of the J.J.
Newberry Store. The former
Reading Company Station on
East Main Street will feature
needlework, 4-H clothing,
etc. The Texgas Corp.
Showroom, 11 South State
Street, will display the art
work. Finally, vegetables,
fruits, nuts and sunflowers
will )>e found in the large tent
on the borough parking lot.
“Tent City”, the
agricultural segment and
„ foundation on which the fair
was built, will be a bustling
center of activity. Sounds of
baby beef, cattle, swine,
sheep and poultry will fill the
Ephrata Community Park
and will become the point of
interest during the judging
of the livestock. Also
exhibited for public viewing
will be tobacco, grain,
forage, various farm
displays and mini displays
by youth groups.
< Among the many contests,
branching from the
agricultural portion'of the
fair, are the tractor driving,
garden tractor pulling, cow
milking and pig chase.
A carnival spirit will
prevail on the giant midway
throughout the week,

complete with rides for
children and adults, con
cession stands, games of
skill and free entertainment
nightly.
On Thursday afternoon,
between one and six o’clock,
the midway is overtaken by
thousands of school age
children for what is com
monly known as “Kiddies
Day”. The children are all
given special reduced rates
for rides, including some old
favorites like die ferns
wheel and the merry-go

On Saturday, the final day
of festivities, thousands of
people line the streets to
catch a glimpse of the, little
tots in their fancy costumes
and creatively designed
floats. The baby parade will
be held at two o’clock
