well. John Strawbridge of Stewartstown exhibited the champion animals.
Champions named
for open swine show
YORK In open class swine competion at the York
Fair last week, the entries of John Strawbndge,
Stewartstown, excelled once again. He gave up only a few
first places in the numerous classes of Yorkshire and
Hampshire .competition, for example. Following are
results by breed.
Among Strawbndge’s winnings were: January boar,
February boar, March boar, April boar, champion boar,
senior sow, and senior and reserve senior champion. Each
gilt class was won by the well-known and victorious York
Countian as well. Not surprisingly, every championship
rosette was awarded to Strawbndge. In barrow com
petition, Strawbndge continued to excel! by winning each
single and paired class and his entries were again named
champion.
Second-place ribbons were m most cases also awarded
to Strawbndge. One of the few competitors to outscore the
Yorkshire breeder in any of the classes was Craig Miller,
exhibitor of the winning mature sow. Tim Rehman earned
a top placmg m the junior yearling sow contest.
Strawbndge’s hogs were in the forefront again as they
frequently captured the judge’s eye as being the best in
the show. His winnings included:. January boar, February
boar, March boar, April boar, grand and reserve grand
champion, semor sow. senior and reserve senior cham
pion, January gilt, February gilt, March gilt, April gilt,
and each of the barrow classes. AH of the championship
rosettes were won by Strawbndge.
As was true of his placmgs in the Yorkshire breed,
Strawbndge dominated the show in depth as he most
always shut the competition out of the first two places in
each class.
Ken Bankert and Jeff Waltmyer were the only two
exhibitors who managed to score higher than Strawbndge
in any of the classes. Bankert exhibited he best mature
sow and Waltemyer was owner of the top junior yearling
sow. Strawbndge managed to keep all the honors for
himself in the gilt and barrow classes.
The top ribbons and rosettes were distributed to several
exhibitors in this show, although Greg Innerst and Russell
Combower managed to dominate. Combower had the
champion and reserve champion boar and also all of the
champions in both single and paired barrow divisions.
Innerst had the champion sows and gilts.
Combower had the top individuals in each boar class
except April, which was won by Terry Bennecoff. Innerst
won the mature sow and senior sow class, while Lynn
Sheffer squeezed ahead in the junior yearling sow contest.
In gilt competition, Innerst edged Bennecoff for top
honors in the 'January class, and took the top two places
for February. The March class was won by Bennecoff,
with Russell Combower placing second. Bennecoff then
went on to win the two top places in the April class. Innerst
had the junior champion, Bennecoff came up with the
reserve honor. Innerst’s junior champion was named
grand champion, and his senior champion filled the
reserve grand slot.
In barrow competition, Bennecoff placed first in the
lightweight class, Sheffer was second. Sheffer placed first
