Nitrite ban thought ‘unwarranted’
WASHINGTON, D.C. -
The American Farm Bureau
Federation recently urged
the Secretaries of
Agriculture and HEW to
wait until all facts are in
before considering any ban
on nitrites as a cured meat
nreservative.
Telegrams from AFBF
President Allan Grant went
to Secretary of Agriculture
Bob Bergland and HEW
Secretary Joseph Cahfano.
The eomtemplated ban on
nitrites is based on a study
from Massachusetts In
stitute of Technology. Grant
pointed out that the coor
dinator of that study, Dr
Paul Newbeme, thinks a ban
is “unwarranted” without
three or four years of ad
ditional tests.

Hauseman; 3 and 4 Year
Olds -1. Gary Mase, 2. Gary
Mase, 3. Kerry Boyd, 4.
Dr. Newbeme wants to
study the effect of nitrites on
several test animals, not just
one strain of laboratory rats.
His finding that mtrites can
have “an adverse effect on
one strain of rats under
certain laboratory con
ditions” was interpreted by
USDA and HEW to mean
Richard Heyer, Lehigh
County FFA.
MILKING SHORETHORNS
Nineteen-year old Nedra
Yoder swept each class and
every championship placing
with her three entries. Her
grand champion was sired
by Ridgewood Don Juan.
that nitrites are universally
carcinogenic.
The test rats m the MIT
study were fed massive
doses of sodium nitrite. A
human would have to con
sume nearly 600 pounds of
cured meats per day to equal
the dosage given to the test
animals.
