—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, August 26,1978 98 Six pullers reach paydirt THE BUCK Tractor enthusiasts who visited the Buck Tractor Pulls on Aug. 19 were treated to six full pulls* an unusual happening during contests where a good distance and winning pull is often jusi 250 feet or less. The onslaught of full pulls - a complete run of the 300-foot track - came in the 5000 pound modified and 9000 pound open classes. Powerful engines jetted smoke into the August evening sky and tires scratched the dust wildly as one competitor after another swept through the end-zone in command of hundreds of mechanical horses. Some of the engines develop more than 1000 horsepower. Gary Mills, a regular puller from Fallston, Md., steered a 427 cubic inch Chevy powered machine to victory in the 5000 pound modified class. He dragged the sled for the Ml distance on his first attempt and eventually won with an ef fort of 264 feet and 10 inches during the pull-off. The second slot was won by Eugene Spickler of Elizabethtown who managed a pull of 253-8 after having gone the full distance in his first try. His rig was powered by two Chevy engines.
