—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, August 26,1978 38 Lane. 4-H queens In the Junior Queen contest, Gretchen Doner, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Claude Doner, New Providence R 2, was named winner. Gretchen represented the Rough Riders 4-H Club, and said she was very “happy and surprised.” Lisa King, 1977 Junior Queen crowned her successor. Named First Alternate in the Senior Queen contest was Carol Stinson, representing the Rough Riders 4-H Club. Carol is the daughter of The Rev. and Mrs. Melvin Stinson, Strasburg Rl. Jenny Stauffer, presenting the Lititz-Manheim Swift Stitchers 4-H Club was named first Alternate Junior 4-H Queen. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Stauffer, 237 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster. In an onstage interview by Mistress of Ceremonies Roxanne Stein, WGAL-TV News, Suzy was asked to tell how she would explain 4-H to someone else. She said, “I would tell them it is a great organization, and how it has helped me grow. It helped me gain experience in many areas and meet new people and make many ne w friends. It’s made me a better person and helps me strive for the important things.” Gretchen was asked what she enjoyed most about 4-H, and she responded by saying she liked helping others, through a project her club has which teaches ham dicapped children to ride horses. Other contestants in the junior contest were: Gayle Weaver, Bnckerville Community 4-H Club; Michelle Dean, Red Rose Beef and Sheep Club; and Edith Yoder, Pequea Valley 4-H Cooking and Sewing Club. In the senior division, contestants were: Cindy Risser, Manheim Township Community 4-H Club; Bev Buckwalter, Elm-Penryn Community 4-H Club; and Judy Zimmerman, Red Rose Beef and Sheep 4-H Club. Hal Enders, 3203 Horizon Drive, Lancaster, took first place in the talent contest with his presentation on the drum set. The very talented Enders is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Enders, and has been playing the drums for five years. He received a $25.00 award. Enders also received recognition in the national awards program for his dog care project. Second place in the talent contest went to Connie and Carol Balmer, daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Balmer, 592 Millway Road Lititz, who played a trumpet duet. Yvonne Eshleman, Lan caster R 2, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Guy Eshleman, captured third place with a piano solo. Second place winners received $15.00 and third place $lO.OO. Others m the talent contest included Joyce and Jeff Wagner, Supatra Sntulanonclha, John Charles, Ann Lusk, Belinda Tindall, Ten Spohn and Cindy Risser. Chern Gochnauer served as mistress of ceremonies for that portion.
