SMOKETOWN A new getting HP hybrid demon
line of seedcom introduced stration plots established at
to this area by P.L. Rohrer& the following locations:
Bros., Inc., has been ex- Raymond Good farm, Lititz;
tremely well received by Leroy' Esbenshade farm,
local growers, according to Manheim; Mark Hitz farm,
Willis Rohrer, president of Lebanon; Henry Balmer
the Smoketown seed firm. farm, Lampeter, and Ivan
Kauffman farm, Honey-
Brook.
There are farmers stop

look over these plots, ac
cording to Garber. “Nearly
everyone we’ve talked to has
been very impressed by the
vigorous growth and healthy
appearance ot the com.”
The Rohrer’s have
distributed com hybrids for
DeKalb since 1940 and in
recent years became
associated with North
American Plant Breeders
(NAPB) as distributors for
other types of seeds. NAPB
reportedly is one of the

“We’ve been involved in
seedcom distribution since
1940, but seldom have we
seen such interest and en
thusiasm as has been
created by the new HP
seedcom, said Rohrer,
adding that these hybrids
were introduced only this
year “more or less on a trial
basis.”
“This is some of the best
looking com we have ever
seen,” said Ralph Garber
referring to demonstration
plantings'made at several
locations. As sales coor

breeders of forages, notably
Apollo alfalfa. This was the
first commercial variety
offering high levels of
resistance to Phytophthora
disease, also known as “wet
foot” condition in alfalfa.
Still newer in Vangard, a
variety bred to overcome
another important alfalfa
disease, anthracnose.
Frequently referred to as
“Summer decline”, an
thracnose, like
Phytophthora, is said to
have caused significant
losses in Pennsylvania.
“We weren’t interested in
the com at first, as we
already represented a major
seedcom line. But two of our
people, visiting NAPB
facilities in the Midwest on
other business, came back
very enthused about this
growing phase of the plant

Rohrer recalled.
In the Big Valley area, not
far from State College, a
com demonstration plot was
put in under the sponsorship
of one of Rohrer’s wholesale
clients, Union Mill Soil

Byier, the owner of this
business, explained that it
was a tough Spring for com
in their area. “Our plot was
flooded out and germination
problems showed up in some
of the early plantings due to
wet, cold conditions.” Even
so, he says Union Mill
customers planted around
100 bags of various HP
numbers, in addition to 80
acres Byier planted himself.
“Several of these hybrids
look very good,” he said,
We always said ventilation effi
ciency is best measured by the
cubic feet of air moved for each
watt of electricity used.
Now, specialists are stressing
the importance of VER Ventil
ation Efficiency Ratio and
Vent-O-Matic can give you this
information with its fans.
Test results from the Tuscarora
wind tunnel laboratory prove that
Vent-O-Matic fans are the most
efficient on the market. They were
designed that way. Vent-O-Matic
fans can save enough electricity
to pay for themselves in less than
three years And, going still further,
a Vent-O-Matic System can save
up to 30% of the brooding heating
fuel because of its heat-saving
design principle.
These benefits are extremely
important when you considerithis
statement from Pennsylvania State
University: “In the last five years
