Stonylonesome Farm hosts
Pa. Angus Field Day

the Laurel Mountains in
Westmoreland County was'
the setting for this year’s
Pennsylvania Angus Field
Day held on July 21 and 22 at
Stonylonesome Farm,
Stahlstown, Pa.
An educational and social
gathering hosted by William
H. Rea, owner of
Stonylonesome Farm, the
weekend featured cattle
judging contests, square
dancing, panel discussions,
and the group’s annual
meeting not to mention
good old-time visiting among
members.
Among the main at
tractions of Saturday
morning's program was a
heifer judging contest. Sarah
Fretz, the daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. John Fretz,
Zionsville, Pa., Lehigh
County, was the highest
overall individual judge in
the 4-H division with 191 out
of 200 points. All totaled, 38
individuals from eight
counties competed m that
contest.
Miss Fretz also placed
highest in the oral reasons
segment of the judging
contest. To demonstrate this
part of the competition, the
Pennsylvania Angus Queen
recited her reasons to the
approximately 300 Penn
sylvania Angus Association
members present.
The top team in the
judging contest came from
Westmoreland County.
Fayette County’s group
came in second and Beaver,
third.

Stewart touched on the
enthusiasm now being
generated in the industry
stating that increased prices
and a need for the product
have spurred cattlemen on.
He reported that some
breeders have sold all their
bulls and have even
exhausted their supply of
yearling bulls.
Stewart also cautioned the
group to keep the Angus
breed image the way it is to
keep the price.
“The Angus breed has the
reputation for good marbling
and for being the best
mothermg breed,” he said
“If we get away from that it
will hurt us.”
During the day the
breeders were also in
termittantly encouraged to
