    Poultry manure boosts protein
of corn silage and corn stover
EAST LANSING, Mich -
Dehydrated poultry excreta
(DPE) is a high quality,
inexpensive source of
nitrogen for increasing the
protein content of com silage
and com stover fed to
growing heifers, says Dr.
John E. Keys, an animal
scientist with USDA’s

and com stover contain
about eight per cent protein,
but growing heifers need
about 12 per cent protein in
their diets.
Dr. Keys and animal
scientist Dr. Lewis W.
Smith, formulated four
complete diets and fed them
to yearling Holstein heifers
for 140 days in research at

(A) 88.3 per cent whole com
plant and 11.6 per cent DPE;
(B) 61 per cent whole com
plant, 27.9 per cent com
stover (finely ground), and
11.1 per cent DPE; (C) 49.7
per cent whole com plant, 25
per cent com stover, and 25.3
per cent DPE; and (D) 71.6
per cent whole corn plant
and 28 4 per cent DPE. The
diets were mixed and stored
in silos for 45 days. The com
stover m diets B and C was
ground so that it would pack
tighter in the silo and
prevent air pockets. Air
pockets encourage mold to
form during ensiling.
Heifers gained .81
kilograms (kg) per day on
diet A; .72 kg on diet B; .69
on diet C; and .73 on diet D
Heifers on diets A and B ate
slightly less feed and gained
slightly more weight than
heifers on diets C and D
However, all diets provided
sufficient protein for growth

combination with corn
stover provides enough
additional-crude protein for
growing heifers. Wet poultry
excreta could be substituted
for the DPE on an equivalent
dry matter basis when
making silage. Both wet and
dried poultry excreta are
considerably less expensive
than soybean oil meal or
commercial supplements
used to boost the protein
content of com silage.
Dehydrated poultry ex
creta is not sanctioned for
commercial use by the Food
and Drug Administration.
Dr. Keys presented his
research findings before a

American Dairy Science
Association and the
American Society of Animal
Science here today.
