Wildesen, manager of the
livestock show
Wildesen said the live
farm animals, including beef
and dairy cattle, sheep, pigs,
and ponies, were taken to 20
county schools where 3850
children in kindergarten and
the' first grade were per
mitted to touch the animals
and were given basic in
formation on the value of
farm animals to health and
economy Another 547
children in higher grades
and 90 children in special
education classes par
ticipated in the program
The school visits, Wildesen
said, emphasized the theme
that “animals are good; they
eat things people cannot eat
and turn those things mto
hulk and meat ”
He said the average urban
youngster does not have the
opportunity to come in
contact with farm annuals,
other than in textbooks, and
that the “hands on ap
pearance of the animals
brought many favorable
comments from teachers ”
The school visitation
program is one of many
year-round educational
activities conducted by the
Eastern National which
annually holds a livestock
show at the Maryland State
Fair Grounds here for
livestock breeders from
more than 20 states. This
year’s show is set for Oc
