Jr. Holstein Club holds
fitting and showing day
By JOYCE BUPP
Staff Correspondent
EAST BERLIN - About 30
youngsters and half that
many calves spent this past
Monday galloping through a
crash course in clipping,
washing, leading, and
showmg dairy animals.
Sponsor of the fun-and
work event was York
County’s Junior Holstein
Club, which held their
animal fitting and showing
day at the Rodman Thomp
son Farm, East Berlin R 2
Members were teamed in
pairs, a novice with a more
experienced junior
showman Each team was
then given an unbroken calf
to prepare for the practice
show which capped the day
long session
Calves nervously tolerated
(in most cases) the flurry of
attention as they were
suddenly confronted with the
unfamiliar sounds of buzzing
clippers, doused with
mounds of soap bubbles and
sprays of cold water,
manicured with wire
brushes, and polished off
with cleaning rags gently
rubbing dirt from tender
ears and carefully combed
and fluffed switches
Adams County Holstein
breeder, Tun Brown, part
ner in Brown Valley
Holsteins, near Littlestown,
judged the afternoon show
Brown commended the
young dairy enthusiasts on
the outstanding job they had
done on the animals in the
few hours alloted to the
fitting preparations
Selected champion
showman of the exhibit was
David King, son of Mr and
Mrs Paul King, Delta R 2
Winner of the reserve
showman award was Kelly
Krebs, daughter of Mr and
Mrs Nevm Krebs of Glen
Rock R 1
Showmanship categories
were divided by years of
actual showing experience
Loretta Cooper captured
first place in the minimum
experience category,
leading a calf at least a head
taller than she was Leslie
King was second, Donna
