Although the harvest has just begun, and it may be too early to make a forecast, the general viewpoint among millers is that the crop isn’t likely to improve. Already a week to 10 days behind schedule, the combines are beginning to cut into grass. While the wheat has stopped growing, the grass continues to get taller. The moisture problem isn’t expected to evaporate. Frequent rams are once again interfering with combining schedules. Most of the millers report few problems so far with impurities, which surprises a number of them, con sidering that the grasses and weeds have had an extra week to grow. Garlic is predominantly absent from the truckloads of wheat also. The wheat arriving at the mills is testing out at 15 to 18 per cent moisture, according to the majority of reports. Loads delivered early in the week carried more moisture than those delivered Thursday, said Tom Flory of Flory’s Mill, Lancaster With farmers anxious to get their crop harvested, some loads are coming m at 19 per cent moisture. Yields are reported down in most areas. The average paying price for the new crop, delivered to the mill is $3.20 per bushel, according to an averagmg of pnces an nounced by the millers on Friday morning.
