State lab to charge for
HARRISBURG - State
Agriculture Secretary Kent
D. Shelhamer has an
nounced that on July 1, the
State Veterinary Diagnostic
Laboratory at Summerdale
will institute a fee schedule
for diagnostic services
performed on food animals
such as cattle, sheep and
swine.
Shelhamer said that the
laboratory will not charge
for diagnostic services for
the many diseases of
livestock and poultry which
may affect public health,
listing tuberculosis,
brucellosis and rabies as
examples. He also said
diseases that are potentially
devastating to the Penn
sylvania livestock industry
will be evaluated at no
charge to the farmer. These
diseases include hog

cholera, pseudorabies,
anthrax and exotic foreign
diseases which “pose a
constant threat to Penn
sylvania livestock and
poultry.”
The Agriculture Secretary
noted that a fee schedule had
been in effect for two years
to cover diagnostic work on
non-foot animals. Because of
its very complete diagnostic
services, veterinarians refer
much of their diagnostic
work to the Bureau of
Animal Industry’s Sum
merdale lab.
