26—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, June 10,1978 Chester Co. rams top performance sale UNIVERSITY PARK - Two Chester County sheep breeders had the top in dexing rams in their respective breeds in Penn State’s 2nd Annual Per formance Ram Test and Sale. William J. MacCauley, Jr. of Atglen had the highest indexing Suffolk ram with a score of 121 and Warn G. Menhennett, Cochranville, had a Shropshire Ram 563, who topped the Shropshires with an index of 110. These rams were on test for 90 days at Penn State’s Meat Animal Evaluation Center. Menhennett’s ram was also the top selling Shrop shire ram at the Per formance Tested Ram Sale on June 3rd. It sold for $320 compared with the breed average of $195. Mac- Cauley’s ram, a single lamb Seen holding his father’s ram, Billy MacCauley, shows the Suffolk ram that topped the Suffolk breed. The ram was sold for $3BO. bom in March, Was well above the breed average when it brought $3BO as compared to the $294 average. The top selling Suffolk was a triplet ram owned by Paul H. Leader of York, Pa. In index it ranked third among the Suffolks with a 116 ratio while a Penn State Suffolk stood in second place with an index ratio of 117. All breeds represented in the test and sale showed healthy increases in sale prices with the exception of Southdowns. Prices were generally 20 per cent better than last year. Breed averages were as follows: Cheviots $lOO, Dorsets $241, Hampshires $l9O, Shrop shires $195, Merlons $BO, Southdowns $67.50, Suffolks $294, and Oxfords $l7O. < #*■ The Menhennett Shropshire Ram 563 topped the Shropshires with an index of lift He sold for $320.
