Horticulture student takes

WILLOW STREET -
Tammy Lefever, Strasburg,
didn’t like conventional
school. So, when she heard
about the horticulture
program at Willow Street
Vocational Technical School,
she decided to give that a try
and found she really liked it.
On Thursday evening she
proved just how much she
did enjoy her courses when
she got up from her seat five
times to gamer several of
the most prestigious honors
handed out at the Hans Herr
Chapter Future Farmers of
America awards banquet.
Miss Lefever’s honors in
cluded star chapter farmer
(horticulture), the Dekalb
award, the County Banker’s
honor, the ornamental
horticulture foundation
award (horticulture), and
the first place plaque for the
county horticulture contest.
“These may be more
awards than I’ve ever given
to one student,” noted FFA
advisor James Kerr, who
stated his policy is to spread

five top FFA honors
out his awards as evenly as
possible.
The 18-year-old Miss
Lefever is a second year
student at the vo-tech school
and is employed at Host
Farms as the greens keeper.
After graduation, she will be
employed at her present job
on a full time basis. Miss
Lefever, who hails from
Lampeter Strasburg High
School, is the daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Paul Lefever.
This year’s star greenhand
in horticulture was Beth
Miller.
Kerr also handed out
foundation awards to his
horticulture students.
Earning those honors were:
Tom Summers, crop
production; Linda Rogers,
placement in agriculture
production; and Andy
Ressler, agri-business.
Kerr also proudly handed
plaques to the top 10 students
m the county horticulture
contest. Out of 67 students
participating in that contest,
