the ground will be more even
because the cultivator won’t
leave a ridge.
They have been planting
com with a six row plateless
planter since they started
minimum tillage in 1973.
Before 1973 the Hix’s
moldboarded all of their
com fields and used a four
row planter with wide rows.
.They strive for plant
populations of between 20 to
21,000 plants per acre except
for their silage com. Here
they plant 24,000 seeds per
acre to hopefully achieve a
plant population 0f22,000.
Lesher explained that
- approximate]'' half of the 425
acres of com they produce is
no-tilled while the remainder
is chiseled. No-till planting
has saved them time, but not
too much in production
costs. This was primarily
attributed to the heavier use
of herbicides. The Leshers
have not increased the
amount of spray on their
minimum tilled ground
however, noting no
significant difference from
conventionally plowed soil.
When planting no-till,
Lesher increases his seeding
rate to about 23,000 seeds per
acre and has found that last
year the no-tilled com

yielded better than the rest
of his com.
Gelsinger explained that
they try to plant 20,500 seeds
per acre to achieve a plant
population of 18,500 to 19,000.
They have also switched
from a four row planter to a
30 inch no-till six row
planter. They follow the
chisel plow with a field
cultivator before planting.
Gelsinger remarked that
they have gone to larger
equipment, using a four
wheel drive tractor for the
first time this year.
All of the interviewed
farmers have used in
secticides during the past
few years. “Ten years ago, I
didn’t use them” stated
Kopfer. John Hiz remarked
that he believes that the com
comes up quicker when
insecticides are applied.
Gelsinger has used in
secticides for the past three
years but planted without
them this year because of
the economics and
availability,” he explained.
“Instead I’m putting the
money towards more fer
tilizer,” he said.
Gelsinger incorporates
liquid nitrogen as close to
planting time as possible to
reduce the loss, followed by
1:30 P.M
about 250 pounds of row
f fertilizer when planting. - ~ ,
John Hix stated that he
thinks incorporation of
herbicides has been “the
best thing ever.” John had
entered com production
contests last year using his
ordinary planting
procedures and was first in
Berks County and second in
the state, in the five acre
contest. ~
In the 25 acre contest he
was placed third nationally
in the class i non-irrigated
division. The com was
planted in a four year old
alfalfa field.
Leshers plow down fer
tilizer which is custom ap
plicated in the Spring and
followed up with 150 pounds
of row fertilizer. Pre
emergance spray is used on
all their com except that
which was no-tilled.
Kopfer explained that he
takes complete soil tests
every year for every field
and applies the individual
ingredients to each field’s
needs, instead of using a pre
mixed blend. But regardless,
130 units of nitrogen are
plowed down in each field.
For row fertilizer Kopfer has

“I change my herbicide
program a little each year,”
'Kopfer mentioned. He goes
heavier on the herbicides
because of the extra mulch
on the surface. Gelsinger
also noted that he applies
herbicides on the heavy
limits which are recom
mended.
Larger equipment has
taken the place of smaller
machines in most instances.
Larger tractors are
especially needed for pulling
chisel plows and off-set
discs. Kopfer has gone from
an 80 horse power tractor to
105 horsepower model
equipped with dual wheels.
Duals have become very
important in reducing
slippage and vibration.
Rae Hix is sold on tractor
cabs, because they make
field work more tolerable.
This year his sons didn't
want to start planting coni
as early as Rae would have
liked because it was too cold.
“But,” said Hix, “next year
we may have a cab on the
planting tractor so they will
plant anyway.”
