arranged in a series of steps
and each step will tell a
project’s name and give an
example of a finished project
done by a 4-H’er. Such items
as hand-sewn garments,
photobooks, cooking uten
sils, growing vegetables, and
live pets will all be on hand
to help tell the 4-H story.
Also 4-H members will be
manning the booth evenings
and over the weekend to talk
to anyone interested in
joining the dub.

leaks sealed with bentonite
Bentonite is a special type
of day used to seal canals,
irrigation ditches, and farm
ponds to prevent water loss
through seepage. It is a fine
granular material yrhich
absorbs water and swells 10
to 15 times its original
volume. When bentonite is
mixed with water and soil, it
forms a jelly-like mass that
prevents water from seeping
through the mixture.
There are several ways to
use bentonite for sealing
farm ponds, but perhaps the

most effective is the dry
placement method.
One should drain the pond,
remove all surface rocks and
vegetable growth, then plow
or disk the leaking area.
Then a person spreads the
bentonite evenly at the rate
of one pound per square foot
and mixes it with the top four
inches of dry soil either by
hand-raking or harrowing or
disking. If equipment is
available, roll and pack the
treated area and let the pond
refill.
Bentonite can be used
effectively on most any type
of porous soil. But all large
cracks and sink holes should
be filled with a mixture of
bentonite and soil before
starting area treatment.
Bentonite is fairly ex
pensive; and for best results,
it should be used according
to instructions.
