Pa.’s first endurance ride held KENNETT SQUARE - Earlier in May, the Liberty Bell 50, Pennsylvania’s first endurance ride, was held near Kennett Square, Chester County. Horses and riders from all over the east coast gathered to try their luck in competing to prove that their mounts were the most fit and could cover the 50 mile course in the least time in the best condition. The Arabian Breed award went to Valerie Kanavy, Half Arabian Trophy was won by Marilyn Miller, Woodsboro, Md., who rode Buddy, a 12 year old part-Arab gelding. Quarter Horse trophy went to Larry Kanavy, riding his 7 year old mare Charge Cindy. Appaloosa Trophy went to Arlene Everman, from Winchester, Kentucky, who rode Leo Ann, a registered mare. The unregistered horse award went to Finka S. Cathey, Frederick, Md., who rode a 7 year old bay gelding named Michael. Thirty three horses started the race. Twenty-two finished the course. The length of time needed to prepare for an Endurance AIR CONDITIONING YORK CHAMPION IV Ride varies, of course, with each animal. A horse who has had a vigorous work history on the race course or hunt field will take less time and work to condition than the horse who is an un schooled five year old (minimum age for most Endurance Rides). Once a horse has been fit, it seems to take less time and effort to get him fit again. Still, most riders allow 10 or 12 weeks to prepare for a 100 Mile Competitive Ride and up to a year to prepare for a 100 Mile Endurance Ride. The most soughtarter Trophy on an Endurance Ride, besides the elusive first over the finish, is the trophy given for the best condition amongst the top ten or top five. Endurance Riding has no minimum time. There is a maximum time for com pletion, however. Also, the competition takes place during twenty-four hours in most cases.
