Angus bull sells
QUEENSTOWN, Md. -
Some called it the end of a
dynasty, others said it was
the end of an era in Angus
breeding. But, the owner and
managers of the Wye Angus
herd saw the Wye Plantation
Bull Sale as just a sidebar in
the ongoing history of the
world famous beef cattle
breeding herd.
On January 20 of this year,
Arthur A. Houghton, Jr.
chairman of Steuben Glass
and director of Coming
Glass Works, both located in
Coming, N.Y. made a gift of
his herd to the University of
Maryland at College Park in
order that the integrity of the
herd would continue.
The cattle that the college
did not select for breeding
purposes was then slated to
be sold at auction. On
Monday, May 8 that auction
was held with a grand total
of $932,700 taken in for 115
bulls in a six-hour-long sale.
No females were sold.
The highest selling bull
was Contact of Wye, a 5-
year-old herd sire which sold
for $115,000. The animal was
jointly purchased by Picket
Fence Farm, Grays Lake,
HI., and Lincoln Land Angus
Farm, Fisher, HI.
At $lOO,OOO Franchester of
Wye, another herd sire, was

home for the most number of

breeders from that state.at a
total of $93,000. In all, 1500
individuals turned out for the
sale.
