Approximately 100 4-H’ers attended the program which began with game playing, led by Karen Hoke, Bev Hale, and Sue Bomberger. The participants then divided into workshop groups. These groups were headed by a chairperson and a special guest. The four-wheel drive tractor has more traction and less slippage, he finds. “It does big fields better than the old style tractors,” he noted. “About the only place it isn’t good to use is in a small field with lots of rocks.” He also related that he found the fuel efficiency better, and in general, the tractor uses its power more efficiently. “It’s great for large jobs,” he stated. Thinking of the future, he commented that he believes that the farmers that have them now like them, and more will get them in the near future. “The next couple of years will tell for sure,” he added. From Ephrata R 3, Morton Fry, of Miles W. Fry and Son, talked of his recently purchased four-wheel drive tractor. The operation is a nursery and farm com bination, involving 300 to 400 acres. The tractor bought is excellent in mud. In fact, he related that the tractor is excellent to use in all con ditions, and he believes that they should have had one years ago. “We use it in mud that we could never have gotten through with a two wheel drive tractor,” he added. Glad that they have the tractor, he commented that a farmer’s need of a four wheel drive would only depend on the size of his operation. Norman Laffey, from Cochranville, is going into his third year of having a four-wheel drive tractor. When asked how he liked it, his reply, “Good.” He went on to say, “The four-wheel drive Steiger takes the place of two of the old tractors and it gets more done than they ever did. We got it because we didn’t have enough men and it saves us money. It just gets more done, and uses less time. Besides that, we can get in the fields earlier in the Spring.
