lb. slaughter steers closed
1.50- higher, others 1.00-
1.50 higher. Heifers were
1.50- higher, instances
2.25 higher on high-choice
and prime. Cows were 1.00-
1.50 higher, instances 2.00
higher and bulls firm to 1.00
higher.
Four day receipts 14,900 as
compared 16,500 previous
week and 14,400 a year ago.
The upward spiral in fed
cattle prices continued
under a broad demand by
most buying interests with
best outlet for choice and
prime 1100-1300 lb. Steers
and 950-1100 lb. heifers in
reflection of the price dif
ferential on carcass beef.
Closing price levels on
slaughter steers were 7.25-
8.50 above the first week in
January and heifer prices
were 6.75-7.50 higher; only
three times since the first of
the year has the weekly
trend been downward, and
these declines were of very
modest proportions. The
overall finish of the steer and
heifer supply showed some
slight improvement over
more recent weeks with an
increasing percentage of
choice. Supplies were quite
well distributed over the
trading period. Steers made
up approximately 39 per cent
and heifers 32 per cent. Cows
comprised 12 per cent and
feeders 13 per cent, in
cluding modest volume
fleshy two-way steers and
heifers.
