Stop rabbits from nibbling on shrubs
DOVER, Del. - Check to see if rabbits have been nib
bling on your ornamental shrubs and young trees, if so you
can fight back without harming animals, suggests James
J, McKeehen, Delaware County Extension agricultural
agent. Rabbits gnaw the bark and clip the lower twigs on
young woody plants during the Winter when other plant
foods are scarce. This nibbling is especially prevalent
during periods of snow cover. Homeowners who ex
perience rabbit damage can prevent it by placing a wire
cylinder guard around the stem of each plant, by wrap
ping the stem with weather-proof paper, or by using
chemical repellents. As snow depth increases, rabbits can
reach higher than guards or wraps so repellents have
some advantages over mechanical protectors; although
guards and wraps give excellent protection of lower stems
in normal Winters.
The chemical thiram is distasteful to rabbits. Two
formulations of thiram are Arason-42S and Magic Circle

increases reliability and reduces maintenance, with watt winding deliver superior motor starting ability,
the advantage of ready service accessibility. Maxi-watt is an extra winding in the fields that
provide extra power for heavier motor starting loads.

Rabbit Repellent. These liquids can be applied by brush or
spray to the stems and twigs to be protected. The length of
effectiveness of repellents depends on the amount of rain,
snow, and weathering of the chemical. Addition of a latex
type sticker will prolong the effectiveness up to three
months. McKeehen advises that these repellents are
available at many garden supply centers.'Be certain to
check the chemical label for application details and other
information.
Pick bagworms from evergreen trees
UNIVERSITY PARK - If you’re looking for a Winter
job to do in the garden, try looking for and picking off
bagworms. These are insects that frequently attack
conifer trees, notably arborvitae, juniper, hemlock, larch
and pine, says James J. McKeehen, Delaware County
Extension agricultural agent. The caterpillar spins a
tough, spindle-shaped bag an inch or two long. He uses
bits of foliage or needles from the host plant to disguise
the bag in which he spends the Winter, and so you have to
look sharp to find the bags.
McKeehen suggests burning the bags or placing them in
a deep container near the infested trees. If you put the
bags into a container there’s a chance that you’ll get some
help from parasites to help control bagworms. Any
parasites in the bags will emerge and attack the bagworm
caterpillars next Summer.
