WHAT'S NEW
WOVEN WIRE
FLOORS
Woven wire, instead of
slats, is the flooring of the
future, claims G. L. Un
derhill, president of Delphi
Products Co., P.O. Box 256,
Delphi, Ind., 46923, in an
nouncxng the introduction of
its Farmcraft Tender-Care
woven flooring.
Citing the increasing use
of woven wire flooring in
confinement buildings in
Europe during the past 10
years, Underhill said there
are four important ad
vantages over slats.
First: woven wire
flooring makes weaning in
three weeks practical.
Second: because woven
needed, on the average, of
about twice a week. The
crackling condition of
hooves occurs year round, in
the Winter from frozen
ground and in the Summer
from dry conditions. To
maintain a sound horse, a
little effort is worth the time.
And making certain that
each horse gets the best of
shoes, the Lancaster County
blacksmith makes his
rounds daily. And when he
can, he takes his camera, for
he never knows when a
picture worth remembering
will appear on the horizon.

wire flooring does not have
any horizontal flat surfaces,
it keeps dry. The result is
less corrosion, less rusting,
and longer service life for
the flooring.
Third: Woven wire
flooring produces a cleaner,
dryer atmosphere which
reduces the stress on baby
pigs and they are ready for
weaning sooner. Faster
weaning permits producers
to rebreed sows in seven
days, resulting in greater
profits from more frequent
litters.
Fourth: woven wire
flooring greatly reduces the
amount of leg and foot
abrasions on both small and
large pigs.
Experience has shown,
Underhill said, that woven
wire flooring not only sheds
moisture more readily but
also permits manure to fall
through more easily. The
entire areas of the pens can
be used, so they need not be
so large.
The new Tender-Care
woven wire flooring is
available in 4 ft. by 8 ft. and 4
ft. by 10 ft. sections. The
flooring wires are ap
proximately "1/5 inch in
diameter and the slot size is
3/8 inch by Vh inches. Other
sizes are available on
request.
