ANNAPOLIS, Md. -
Maryland hog producers are
showing active support of
the “Nickles For Profit”
check-off program ac
cording to figures released
by the Maryland Pork
Producers Association
which show a jump of almost
$2OOO collected in the latest
period.
The program, involving a
producer’s voluntary
agreement to cheek-off a
nickle for every slaughter
hog sold, collected $7387,15

for calendar 1977 according
toMPPA.
Therefore, some 144,500
hogs were covered during
the period. In 1976, the first
year of the program in
Maryland, some $5400 was
collected represents ling
sales of approximately
108,000 slaughter hogs.
Hogs slaughtered for home
consumption are excluded as
are hogs shipped out of state.
The money is collected by
livestock dealers, auction
markets and slaughter

metropolitan areas such as
Baltimore and Washington.
