HARRISBURG - State
Agriculture Secretary Kent
Shelhamer said recently that
recent investigations by the
Agriculture Department’s
Bureau of Foods &
Chemistry have resulted in
two seizures of shipments of
jugged syrup which was
fraudulently labelled as
“maple syrup,”
Noting that a number of
complaints have also been
received by restaurant
goers. Shelhamer warned
consumers to be sure they
are getting “what they pay
for.”
The Secretary said that
federal standards have been
set for products labelled as
“maple syrup,” outlining
just what may or may not be
included in those products.
Pennsylvania has
traditionally been one of the
leading maple syrup
producing states, ranking
fifth in the nation in recent
years. The maple syrup
production industry is a
risky business, depending
greatly on the weather and
temperatures when the sap
is running.

Shelhamer said.
The Agriculture Secretary
suggested that “when
purchasing maple syrup in a
store, read the label. Maple
syrup must be at least 66 per
cent maple sap, and contain
no other ingredients except
water, salt, defoammg
agents and preservatives.
This information must be on

As in other European

and land prices were at a
record high. One fanner we

official admitted that during
the time he had been in
Denmark, he had never
