Rare plants
(Continued from Page 42)
A sampling of the many
varieties of rare, but not
particularly difficult to care
for, plants include a number
of peperomias. According to
Mrs. Oberholtzer, she and
her husband were the first in
- this area to propogate the
coin leaf peperomia. It is the
largest of this plant type and
is characterized by waxy
green leaves and a bullrush
type flower protruding from
the top of the cluster of thick
foliage.
The Davallia plants which
include the “footed ferns”
such as squirrel foot, rabbit
foot, and paw (Bear foot)
ferns resemble fem foliage
but have the unique
characteristic of forming
fuzzy roots or rhizomes
which grow out of the potting
medium and down over the
sides of the pot Mrs.
Oberholtzer said these
Davallia are considered rare
because they take so long to
root. It may take a year and
a half to form a new plant,
and several years to grow to
a large plant.

Another of the many
unusual varieties of the
usual house plants at
Oberholtzers is the succulent
geranium. “It either turns

the goldfish plant, and the

plants available at
Oberholtzers.
Mrs. Oberholtzer shared a
few things to remember
when caring for rare as well
as not-so-rare plants. First,
the biggest mistake is to be
impatient, to plant in too
large a pot, to water too
much, and to feed too much.
Plants need to dry and
breathe between waterings
as a usual rule - some types
vaiy, however.
To encourage higher
humidity in the air place
plants together in groups
and set an open jar of water
among them, she advised.
